Frugal fine dining | Menus trim the fat off prices

- jwilson@thesunnews.com

A sour economy has made fine dining a sweet choice.

Owners of local upper crust restaurants know they need you like Uncle Sam needs those recruits.

Without you, they don't exist. They want you, but they also know some of you believe fine dining is not a bargain in a bad economy.

Contact JOHANNA D. WILSON at 626-0324.This has led to deep discounts, lower-priced menus and other creative measures to entice you to patronize their fancy places.

At Rocco's in Pawleys Island, a lounge menu featuring 13 entrees under $18 is now in the same place where you can get the $34 veal chop entree.

"We have created a menu that works for us, works for the guests, helps keep us open, keeps us happy, keeps the customers happy and the chefs happy," said John Nye, general manager of Rocco's.

The Library in Myrtle Beach has even rolled out what owner Shad Velasco is calling a Journey menu.

His new menu offers four course meals for $34.95, which is the cost of the steak Diane entree on the regular price menu.

"I think we are at a point in our lives where people don't think fine dining prices are fair anymore," Velasco said.

Fine dining is becoming economically competitive and cost effective dining.

"Everybody is doing it," said Kurt D'Aurizio, director of cuisine for the Divine Dining Group. "They are doing these things because they know their sales from the previous years are down. I don't know of anybody up over previous years. The smart business owners are figuring out programs that work."

Divine Prime, a Divine Dining property at the Market Common, will soon offer 50 percent off any entree once a week.

It already has a $35 three-course prix fixe menu.

At the Divine Fish House in Murrells Inlet, the menu is being restructured to reflect a menu with a price point from $18 to $25, instead of one in the $20s to the $30s.

Each Divine Dining restaurant has its own programs in place, D'Aurizio said.

Roy & Sid's American Kitchen, for example, has had its themed menu with discounts and specials in place for nearly a month.

Some highlights include free dining for children 12 and younger on Mondays and senior citizens' pricing of $20 from 3 to 6 p.m. That's the price for two people on Tuesdays. Read more online:
