Outdoor activities not limited to golf and sunbathing

- Special to The Sun News

As we trudge through the end of a soggy fall, much of the country is bracing for the start of winter, which is likely to freeze folks' desire to go outside and send many a northerner south to warmer weather.

In trading snow for snowbirds, Myrtle Beach's winter months have a very different feel from our visitor's homes. Missing is the charm of a crisp walk through a snow-covered forest or the excitement of quick jaunt for a day on the slopes. But that doesn't mean people looking for outdoor options are relegated to golf courses and charter fishing boats.

For those looking to capture some seasonal charm without leaving the coast, check out The Market Common. This year, the shopping center is offering area skaters the chance to cut a rut in a synthetic ice skating rink for the first time. READ MORE >

Ice Skating Rink on WMBF News!

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An ice-skating rink is coming to Myrtle Beach this Saturday at the Market Common.

The Market Common will open the synthetic ice skating rink in Valor Park from Dec. 19 through Jan. 3. The rink will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be closed Dec. 24-25.

At the Market Common Piggly Wiggly they are hoping that skaters cruising the rink will translate into shoppers cruising their aisles this winter.

"We are a tourist store ... so any event during this time helps out." Store Operator Timmy Parrott told WMBF News. Parrott says events at the Market Common generally equal a direct boost in sales. "We normally increase anywhere from 20 to 25 percent during event weeks."

Gordon Biersch hosts Toys for Tots Toy Drive - article in The Sun News

Toy Drive Way Off Usual Pace

The Marine Corps is always looking for a few good men and women, and former Marines and associates are looking for a few thousand new toys for Horry County children. As of Monday, the annual Toys for Tots drive is short about 20,000 toys, according to John Kovalcik, one of the dedicated Marine Corps League (Detachment 873) members who are working hard to put more unwrapped new toys in collection boxes.

"I'm confident we will put a dent in a bad year," Kovalcik says. "People don't know what's coming tomorrow" and are forced to not make donations they might have done. "We're getting phone calls'" from folks who have never asked for help, a report just like those heard at every food pantry and helping agency.

On Wednesday, The Market Common and Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant are raising money for Toys for Tots with a percentage of proceeds from luncheon and a 5:30 to 8 p.m. dinner with Santa going to the venerable toy drive. The establishment also will accept toys and monetary donations all day. Toys must be new and unwrapped and may be placed in any of the nearly 300 collection points in and around Horry County. MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Barnes and Noble at the Market Common is adding some competition to the holiday season and finding a way to have shoppers visit other businesses in the community.

The bookstore is handing out "Elf on the Shelf" scavenger hunt sheets. Shoppers will have to visit different stores and restaurants in search of hidden elves.

Once all the elves have been found and noted on their registration sheet the shopper will be entered into a drawing that could win them a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble.

"The parents get to shop, and the kids just get to go around and hunt for the elf and have a good time," said Hatton Gravely of the Market Common. "It makes shopping a fun experience here."

The "Elf on the Shelf" scavenger hunt will last until December 23. See story on WMBF News >

Katie's Closet in the news!

Prom aides open shop in area

- For The Sun News

When Katie Rhoden launched a program to help fellow students at St. James High School get the formal clothing they couldn't afford so they could attend the prom, she never dreamed it would mushroom into a nonprofit agency that now serves a handful of S.C. and N.C. counties.

She's frankly "flabbergasted," she said last week about plans to open a boutique Dec. 13 in Myrtle Beach's Market Common, where students can select stylish gowns and tuxedos that have been donated for their use.

The shop is at 3064 Deville St. in space donated by The Market Common. It also will include a retail section of unique items, the profits from which will help defray the cost of serving hundreds of teens from Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties in S.C. and Brunswick and Columbus counties in North Carolina.
